Set up before you land: bag zipped and in front, luggage in your own hands, and a firm disinterest in anyone offering to help.
Option 1 — Taxi (flat fare, best door-to-door)
Take the official rank of white metered taxis and request the tariffa predeterminata — Naples’s system of fixed flat fares to set destinations including the historic center, Centrale, and the port. Name your destination and the flat fare together before the car moves, and the meter games described in the city brief simply can’t begin. Given how close the airport is, the fixed fare into town is modest, and it delivers you to your door instead of into Garibaldi’s crowd.
What it looks like
At the rank and just outside the terminal: a “driver” who approaches you rather than waiting in the queue, an unstarted or “broken” meter, or a flat fare quoted above the posted tariffa predeterminata. Also the freelance “porter” who lifts your bag toward a car uninvited — that’s a fee and possibly a steer to an unofficial ride.
Option 2 — Alibus (best value, to Centrale and the port)
The Alibus shuttle runs from outside arrivals to Piazza Garibaldi (Napoli Centrale) and on to the port at Molo Beverello — the latter ideal if you’re headed straight to a Capri or Ischia ferry. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes, frequent, cheap; buy from the machine, the terminal desk, or onboard, not from anyone circulating. Its one catch is the destination: it delivers you into Garibaldi, so step off with your guard already set — phone away, bag in front, straight past the porters to your onward connection.
