Schiphol is one of Europe's easiest arrivals: the train to Centraal leaves from under the terminal, and your contactless bank card is the ticket. The entire scam surface is a handful of taxi touts working Schiphol Plaza — walk past them and the city is yours.

What to expect after landing
Schiphol is a single-terminal mega-hub built around one central space — Schiphol Plaza — where arrivals, shops, and the train station meet. Immigration and baggage are orderly; budget normal big-hub time and nothing more. The Plaza itself is the whole “trap” section of this guide: freelance taxi touts drift through it murmuring “taxi? taxi to city?” at anyone towing a suitcase, steering catches toward unmarked cars at several times the metered fare. Option 1 — The train (the default, by a wide margin)
Escalators in the middle of Plaza drop you straight onto the platforms: direct trains to Amsterdam Centraal every few minutes, 15–17 minutes end to end. The ticket is your contactless bank card or phone: tap the OVpay gates at Schiphol, tap out at Centraal, done — the fare settles automatically, and the same tap runs the city’s trams and metro all week. Option 2 — Official taxi or app ride
The official rank sits directly outside Plaza — licensed, metered, orderly. Expect a 20–35 minute ride into the center at a fare several times the train’s; worth it for groups, mobility needs, or serious luggage. Uber and Bolt pick up at signed points a short walk away at similar money. Between the rank and the apps there is no reason any Plaza tout should ever get a yes.

Do this instead
Decide before you land — train unless you have a reason not to — and walk Plaza like a local: past every murmur, down the escalators, tap, board. Eighteen minutes later you’re at Centraal with your guard correctly set for the one place in Amsterdam that actually needs it.
Option 3 — Bus 397 (the museum-side alternative)
The Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397) runs from just outside Plaza to Leidseplein and Museumplein — useful when your hotel sits on that side of town, since Centraal would mean backtracking. Around 30 minutes; OVpay tap or a ticket from the driver’s machine, not from anyone freelancing at the stop.
Late-night arrivals
Schiphol keeps genuine all-night service: night trains to Centraal roughly hourly, gates tapping as normal, plus the 24-hour rank and apps. That makes 3 a.m. logistics here easier than almost anywhere on this site — the only thing that intensifies after midnight is tout confidence in the Plaza, aimed at exactly the exhausted arrivals who’ve stopped reading signs.
